I met up with some dear friends last Saturday night at the Quimper Grange to hear an amazing fiddling performance by 3 ultra talented fiddlers who call themselves \”3 Fiddlers, 3 Traditions.\” The 3 fiddlers are Ruthie Dornfeld of Seattle, Kristian Bugge of Denmark and his lovely wife, Jamie Fox from Montana. In addition to fiddling the traditional styles of Irish, American old-time, Scandinavian and Eastern European, Ruthie also composes and teaches fiddle music and has performed throughout the country and abroad. Kristian Bugge, being from Denmark, is well accomplished in traditional Danish folk music, and Jamie Fox, who grew up on the Fort Belknap Reservation, was influenced at an early age in the Métis style, and was fortunate to have been mentored by some of the elders in that tradition. This fiddling power trio puts out an eclectic mix of traditional polkas and waltzes (with even a touch of South Amercian Tango thrown in) together with some of Ruthie\’s original compositions, which she also performs on her custom made medieval fiddle (vielle). It was a wonderful evening and a first for me. Needless to say, I am now a fiddle fan. For more information about this delightful trio, check out their website 3 Fiddlers, 3 Traditions.
