Port Hadlock stone scultor, Arliss NewcombArtist Statement

I have been sculpting in stone for over 35 years. After a chance meeting with a stone artist on Salt Spring Island, B.C. in the Spring of 1990, I was fortunate to find a group of like-minded artists in an organization called “Northwest Stone Sculptors Association”, which has given me wonderful support and encouragement over the years.  Each July the Association holds a 9-day symposium just south of Port Orchard, WA at “Camp Pilgrim Firs” with anywhere from 70 to 80 artists attending from several different countries. It’s an event I look forward to very much!

Stone is the medium I use for my artistic endeavors as it has an exciting aspect which I have not found in anything else.  Each stone with its own particular shape, size or internal structure is always a challenge.  I enjoy the beauty and durability of stone, knowing it will be here on this earth long after I am gone.
