Artist's Statement

Victoria Foster Harrison is an Encaustic Printmaker, Collage and Mixed Media Artist.

The unique encaustic printmaking process involves creating a design with pigmented beeswax on a warm palette. Then by laying paper on the wax, the image is imbedded into the paper. The direct result of the lifted paper is an original, one-of-a-kind monotype. She incorporates the monotypes into collage with her own textural photographs, mark making and asemic writing.

The synergy of her right-and-left-brain thinking is reflected in the blending of crisp edges and organic textures. Victoria’s collages often evoke a sense of scroll imagery, resulting in a distinctly vertical visual appeal. On the verge of minimalism, she embraces the Japanese gardening principle of “action and void,” using serene spaces to balance intricate details within her work.

A long-time Washington state resident, she now uses her Port Townsend studio full-time for creating art.  She is a member of International Encaustic Artists, Northwest Collage Society and Women Painters of Washington. You will often find Victoria digging in the dirt in her always evolving garden, or out for a walk in the beautiful Port Townsend walking trails.

Art Display at Finistere
May 29th – September 28, 2024, Port Townsend, WA

Victoria Foster Harrison, an artist at the Curly Girl Art Studio in Port Townsend, WA, displays new modern collages at the premiere northwest restaurant, Finistére. Owners Scott Ross and Deborah Taylor, with over 20 years combined experience in Seattle and New York, present a farm-to-table eatery specializing in high-concept American cuisine. Victoria’s artwork pairs beautifully with the relaxed cosmopolitan vibe of this upscale restaurant.

Victoria harmoniously transitions between her right and left-brain hemispheres when creating artwork. Initially, she uses her creative passions to craft textured backgrounds using a heated palette and pigmented beeswax, generating distinctive images on paper. Next, she employs her logical instincts to curate materials, including the one-of-a-kind monotypes and her original photographs, organizing them by color and pattern before planning the composition of an Encaustic Monotype Collage. Finally, she returns to her intuitive side while adding finishing touches such as mark making and asemic writing to enhance focal points.

Victoria’s artwork can be viewed during restaurant hours, Wednesday and Thursday 3 – 8 pm and Friday and Saturday 3 – 9 pm.  Happy hour and dinner offered.
